Family and Couples Consults

More Than Normal is committed to breaking the intergenerational cycle of psychological trauma. Therefore we believe that the most effective and long-term management of intergenerational PTS (and the myriad of emotional dysfunctions it generates), must be done at the family level. Great progress can be achieved during an individual session, which can be rapidly undone if that person's home life does not support the elements of that session. For example, a child may demonstrate huge positive growth and resilience during consultations that can be reversed by negative attitudes and behaviours of parents and/or siblings. Even the physical environment can be the adversarial factor.

Family dynamics and communication styles are fundamental and critical mechanics that can drive both the favourable and unfavourable qualities of PTS from one generation to the next. They generate the contextual environment which develops understandings of PTS as the family sees it. Addressing the dysfunctional elements that deepen the impacts of PTS can break the intergenerational cycle. Similarly, nurturing and developing the favourable elements can create a family environment that supports members to achieve their optimum potential.

Family consultations can occur before or after the individual consultation. This depends on the demands of the situation and  the discretion of the  practitioner.
